The Knapp Center marked the transition of both the BSD and UCH from the grid of interconnected 40’ wide corridors of the traditional med center to new buildings to the north. The requirements of the NIH to provide 100% outside air to all research laboratories made the old corridors obsolete and the costs associated with outfitting them for 21st century science and health care were unsustainable.
